Delusa per l'ennesima volta da James, che a Cipro l'ha addirittura abbandonata, Agatha torna a casa depressa e apatica. Cerca di distrarsi partecipando alle riunioni delle Dame di Carsely, ma anche lì non trova nulla che la interessi. Si dibatte, infatti, della proposta che l'azienda idrica appena fondata ha fatto al consiglio comunale di Ancombe, un villaggio vicino, e cioè di prelevare giornalmente l'acqua della sorgente del posto, dietro pagamento. Agatha trova tutto ciò piuttosto noioso, fino a quando, su richiesta del suo vecchio amico-nemico Roy Silver, decide di curare il lancio dell'azienda idrica. E appena presa la decisione, s'imbatte nel corpo del presidente del consiglio comunale proprio sotto la sorgente. Era piuttosto anziano, il morto: è scivolato e ha battuto la testa o qualcuno lo ha ucciso? Agatha si mette a investigare: riuscirà a ottenere l'aiuto di James e a riprendere in tal modo la loro relazione?
