Una Venezia cosmopolita ma già offuscata dalle sinistre ombre della discriminazione etnica e religiosa, fa da sfondo a una storia incrinata dal male, dal disgusto, dalla percezione che i rapporti umani siano solo violenza e inganno. La tragedia, andata in scena per la prima volta nel 1596, ruota intorno a uno scellerato contratto e alla sua macabra penale: quello stipulato tra Antonio, mercante veneziano in cerca di denaro per aiutare l’amico Bassanio a corteggiare degnamente la ricca Porzia, e l’usuraio ebreo Shylock, che pretende come obbligazione, se la somma non verrà pagata, il diritto di prendere una libbra di carne dal corpo di Antonio. In questo mondo dominato dal potere del denaro, dove il corpo è merce non meno della vile moneta, troneggia l’ambigua figura di Shylock, possente rappresentazione di un uomo che è al tempo stesso tiranno e vittima, sacrificante e sacrificato, aberrante nella crudeltà e tenerissimo nel dolore di chi si vedrà infine costretto a rinunciare al proprio credo e alla propria cultura.
