Tutto è bene quel che finisce bene viene annoverata – insieme con Misura per misura e Troilo e Cressida – tra le dark comedies, ossia quelle commedie che, pur senza arrivare a conclusioni tragiche, presentano una visione pessimistica della vita. Traendo ispirazione da una novella del Decameron di Boccaccio, Shakespeare mette al centro del dramma il tema della morte, sia attraverso l’immaginario fisico della malattia e della rigenerazione, sia attraverso il riferimento poetico alle last things, ossia al destino finale dell’umanità dopo la morte. Il risultato è una commedia che sa perfettamente rispondere alla sua fondamentale vocazione: quella di risolvere l’ansia della malattia e della morte dei padri nell’amore dei figli, nello scaturire di una nuova vita.
