Coriolano (1608) è l’ultima tragedia di Shakespeare, prima della stagione dei romances. Protagonista di questo dramma di passioni politiche e conflitti etici è Caio Marzio, il condottiero romano distintosi per valore militare nella guerra contro i Volsci, ma poi costretto all’esilio dall’ostilità della plebe. Dopo aver trovato rifugio presso i nemici, li convince ad affidargli una spedizione contro Roma per vendicarsi del suo popolo, ma infine risparmia la città cedendo alle suppliche della madre e della consorte, e in tal modo decreta la propria condanna a morte perché agli occhi dei Volsci è solo un traditore. Coriolano è uomo di abissali antinomie: salvezza e rovina di Roma, è insieme leale e infedele; è una macchina da guerra ma ha il fascino e il candore di chi non sa mentire e non sa mediare. In lui la virtù è sempre la faccia di una medaglia il cui rovescio è un vizio: la sua nobiltà d’animo ha un risvolto ignobile che si chiama superbia, orgoglio, arroganza. «Autore di sé stesso», come lo definisce Shakespeare, è a un tempo artefice della propria grandezza e causa della propria perdizione, è l’eroe solitario e tragico in cui destino e carattere coincidono.

Coriolanus solidified my Shakespeare obsession. I'd become familiar with the canon--Hamlet, Macbeth, Julius Caesar, The Tempest, R&J, etc--but then I read Coriolanus and couldn't believe it. There was this play, rarely talked about, that's as brilliant--if not more brilliant--than all the others so
