Già superbo protagonista delle due parti dell’Enrico IV e dell’Enrico V, è Falstaff il potente motore di questa celebre commedia, composta sul finire del ’500. La tradizione vuole che sia stata commissionata a Shakespeare da Elisabetta I, desiderosa di vedere l’ammirato personaggio – farabutto carismatico, mentitore, spaccone – nelle improbabili vesti di innamorato. Il nuovo Falstaff, approdato nella provinciale e puritana Windsor, è ormai un vecchio nobile sul viale del tramonto che progetta cinicamente di corteggiare le mogli di due ricchi borghesi del luogo per arrivare alle borse dei mariti. In un susseguirsi di imprevisti, intrighi, imbrogli, beffe e controbeffe, l’aristocratico libertino pagherà care le sue malefatte e soprattutto il suo tentativo di sconvolgere l’ordine e i valori del dorato mondo della Merry England (l’onore familiare, l’onestà delle mogli, la ricchezza). Ma con la sua innocenza tra infantile e animalesca finirà anche con lo scoprire l’irresistibile potenza di eros, ergendosi contro l’ipocrisia e l’egoismo di un mondo di piccoli borghesi affamati di denaro.

Okay, I finished it. After all these years, the only Shakespeare play I could never get interested in is finally completed. I read every word of it, and I am sure I'll never read it again. This is Sir John Falstaff’s play; it was a chance for Shakespeare to pad out one of his most popular characters and give him another comic moment. And he failed completely. From Litsy: Glad I have now read this, but it‘s not a favorite Shakespeare on the page. Seems this one is dependent on the performance and if the actors can pull it off, it‘s probably great fun and Fallstaff strikes again, or is brought down again. “A man may be too confident.” "The Merry Wives of Windsor" is generally loathed by scholars, and loved by audiences. The reason is not hard to detect.
