Timone non è un re né un principe. È solo il “favorito” della Fortuna, ma la sua dimora in Atene è una vera e propria corte in cui è riverito da poeti, pittori, mercanti e uomini d’arme: una folla di cortigiani e clienti ai quali elargisce sconsideratamente doni e amicizia, cieco di fronte all’adulazione e all’inganno che lo circondano. Solo quando la sorte gli volge le spalle e a causa della sua prodigalità si ritrova ridotto in miseria, scopre l’ingratitudine di coloro che aveva creduto amici. Il benefattore divenuto misantropo si ritira a vivere solitario e pieno d’odio in una caverna, dove trama la sua vendetta contro la città e il genere umano maledicendone l’insaziabile avidità. Ispirato a uno dei più celebri Dialoghi di Luciano, Timone d’Atene (1608) affida a una figura del mondo classico l’amara riflessione di Shakespeare sulla crisi di valori che, fra Cinquecento e Seicento, accompagna la nascita dell’uomo moderno: la realtà è un deserto dell’anima e del cuore, dove domina, mostro solitario e invincibile, il dio dell’oro e della cupidigia.

This time I liked Timon less than the two other times I have read it. Much of it is probably not even by Shakespeare. and--although Middleton does his professional best to keep the first few acts chugging along--most of it lacks the spark of genius. Of all his plays, this is probably the most maligned, it being perhaps a collaboration with Middleton, but any way you look at it, it is a striking piece.
