Tutti possono esprimere un desiderio. Quello di Lindsay Boxer prevede qualche giorno di vacanza sereno con il marito Joe, la figlia Julie, la loro border collie Martha.
Un sogno che tuttavia non sembra destinato a realizzarsi, almeno per ora. Perché il dipartimento di polizia di San Francisco ha sempre in serbo una sorpresa per Lindsay. Anche se sembrava il momento perfetto, per lei come per le amiche del Club Omicidi: il crimine in calo, l’ufficio del medico legale tranquillo… Persino i tribunali stavano mostrando un po’ di tregua e il ciclo di notizie era così lento che la giornalista Cindy Thomas aveva ricevuto l’incarico di raccontare una storia più legata al folklore che alla cronaca.
All’improvviso, però, la calma apparente viene squarciata: un certo Loman assume il controllo dei titoli, le indagini si infilano in un vicolo cieco e Cindy si imbatte nella strana storia di un uomo dall’identità ignota, rimasto in carcere per due anni con l’accusa di un omicidio di cui non si è mai dichiarato colpevole. L’anno che volge al termine sembra seminare terrore, più che speranza, e l’unico desiderio condiviso dalle quattro ragazze è quello di evitare la tragedia.
Ma proprio quando Boxer e la sua squadra sentono di essere vicini a una risposta, ogni certezza svanisce…
